For many, the holidays are a time of cheer and celebration of family and friends. For others, unfortunately, this is the most painful time of year, illuminating loss, mourning, and excruciating isolation. Suicide carries a devastating stigma, thus creating a barrier to seeking treatment for many who experience ideation as well as those who have been impacted. Many times, surviving families experience avoidance from those around them who do not know how to help, or even where to begin to understand this life-shattering health problem. It has been estimated that at least six people surviving the suicide experience life altering changes hindering the ability to cope and can greatly enhance the arrival of complex grief and depression. Additionally, suicide and stigma create a dual directional impact in that suicide propels stigma, and stigma can propel suicidal ideation, attempt and completion.
